What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Trauma & the brain

Traumatic events can cause memories to be stored in an unprocessed state in the brain, leading to distressing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety. EMDR is designed to help process and integrate these memories so that they no longer cause you distress.

During an EMDR session, I will guide you through a process of recalling the traumatic event while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping. The bilateral stimulation has been shown to help activate the brain’s natural healing process, allowing the person to process and integrate the traumatic memories. I am also trained in the attachment-focused protocol for those with complex trauma presentations.

How can EMDR help me?

  • Reduce the intensity of distressing memories and emotions, such as fear, anger, and guilt.
  • Develop new perspectives on the traumatic event and to see it as less overwhelming.
  • Increase self-esteem to develop a sense of mastery and control over their own lives.
  • Improve their relationships and to feel more connected to others.
